FDA Updates Carbamazepine Label to Urge Genetic Testing for Rare Skin Reactions

The FDA requested makers of a drug indicated for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and neuropathic pain to add a black box warning recommending doctors to test patients of Asian ancestry for the HLA-B*1502 polymorphism due to the increased risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Specialty labs such as LabCorp and Quest have said they can accommodate such genetic testing.
